Field fires in northwest MO during harvest

A northwestern Missouri farmer says field fires this harvest season have been an issue.

Richard Oswald farms in Atchison county.

“There were several fields [that] caught on fire,” he said. “The volunteer fire department, I think, went out to three or four different fields in one day, and a neighbor lost a combine south of me about 15 or 20 miles.”

Oswald tells Brownfield fires will continue to be a concern because of low humidity, but as the weather turns colder, he expects them to be less of a problem.

Otherwise, he said the dry weather has been beneficial.

“This is really nice to be able to go to the field everyday not fight mud, not have a toe rope as part of the thing you want to haul around in your pickup every day,” he said.

Oswald said he didn’t have much production in 2019 because of flooding in fields along the Missouri river.
