Meat groups call for ‘transparency’ in labeling

The North American Meat Institute and the Alliance for Meat, Poultry and Seafood Innovation sent a letter to the USDA requesting the support of ‘transparent’ labeling of cell-based and cultured meat and poultry products.
The letter says the alliance and institute support a labeling framework that ‘fosters transparency, consumer confidence, and a level playing field.”
In March of 2019 USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Food and Drug Administration announced an agreement to jointly oversee the production of cell-based meat.
The institute says under that agreement, USDA will oversee the labeling of cell-based and cultured meat and poultry products while the FDA will oversee the labeling of such seafood products.
Cell-based and cultured meat and poultry products are not currently on the market in the U.S.
