Frost, crop residue causing emergence issues for some crops

A South-Central Nebraska farmer says the effects of drought and an early frost made him replant some soybeans.

Doug Saathoff tells Brownfield freezing temperatures hit a large portion of the state. “I had a thin stand to begin with.  I had a few that froze off that made the stand even thinner.  I replanted about 100 acres.  I did some for the neighbor. I did about 40 acres.  He had the same situation.”

And, he says, crop residue had trouble decaying because of extended dryness. “No-tilling into that corn residue was pretty challenging. The emergence on that is pretty sketchy.”

But for corn, Saathoff says it’s a different story. “And, things look really good, especially for the first planted corn just really looks amazing right now.”

He says recent moisture has helped get crops back on track even though the area has missed several rain events last week.
