Agronomist offers nitrogen management tips
Many farmers facing higher input costs are considering nitrogen management options.
DEKALB Asgrow Technical Agronomist Jordan Arndell is encouraging growers to consider split applications of nitrogen fertilizer.
“Spitting up that nitrogen application would be an excellent practice this year,” he says. “I think that crop would have a better chance to utilize that nitrogen when we do a split application more so if we put some nitrogen in the ground around planting and then come back and side-dress them. If we turn off really wet again and we lose some of that nitrogen to leaching, then we’re able to help supplement some of that nitrogen loss when we do have a split application.”
He tells Brownfield nitrogen stabilizers will also be helpful.
“We can really see a good return on investment in preserving our nitrogen and it’s just as simple as using a nitrogen stabilizer,” he says. “We’re going to try to get our bang for our buck out of everything we do this year.”
Arndell is based in southern Indiana.
