USDA expands Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program eligibility

The USDA has modified eligibility requirements for the Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program to better aid pork producers who did business through the spot market between April 16th and September 1, 2020, due to a reduction in packer production.

The agency clarified their definitions of “spot market sales” and “sales to a packer” to better reflect nontraditional transactions including sales to dealers, cull markets, meat lockers and others.

The application deadline has also been extended to April 29th. Anyone who has already submitted their claims are allowed to amend their applications if needed.

National Pork Producers Council President Terry Wolters says they welcome the clarified parameters and hopes they will help guide funds into the right hands, considering producers forced into spot market sales have been excluded in previous recovery programs.
