Soybean yields are a “wildcard”

Purdue Ag Economist Jim Mintert says soybean yields will be a wildcard in upcoming USDA reports.

“That’s true not just here in the Eastern Corn Belt and in Indiana, but elsewhere in the country as well,” he says.

He tells Brownfield he’ll be watching to see what happens in the northwest part of the corn belt.

“Especially in North and South Dakota and Minnesota where they have experienced some dry conditions,” he says. “There has been some moisture and some moisture in the forecast so I think we’re going to continue to watch that area very closely. Those yield projections that USDA issued (Thursday) are significantly lower for those states than they were last year.”

Mintert says he’s curious to see if those yield projections will be pulled back again.
