2021 World Food Prize recipient
The World Food Prize Laureate for 2021 is a food systems researcher focused on ending malnutrition and increasing access to nutritious food.
She’s Dr. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted who said at the award ceremony this morning, “I have dedicated most of my career to improving food and nutrition security for the millions of malnourished women and children in countries across Asia and Africa.”
Dr. Thilsted has pioneered fish farming methods that are productive and environmentally responsible.
“There are species of common fish and other aquatic foods such as muscles, crabs and seaweed which are rich in multiple essential micronutrients.”
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says Dr. Thilsted is a worthy recipient of the World Food Prize for her work to increase nutrition and access to food by helping families raise their own fresh fish in rice-field fisheries and developing culturally appropriate fish-based foods.
