June has been hot and windy in Nebraska

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for crops in Nebraska with persistently hot, dry and windy conditions.

Temperatures have been in the 90’s through much of June and it’s also been one of the windiest months on record.

Dennis Fujan raises non-irrigated corn and soybeans near Prague in east-central Nebraska. He says despite the tough conditions, the crops have held up pretty well.

“We have real good subsoil moisture. In fact, you can dig down just a little ways and you’re finding moisture,” Fujan says. “It’s not like they’re really hurting that bad yet. Probably the biggest thing has been getting a little bit beat up by the wind.”

He says the constant winds have made it a challenge to get crops sprayed.

“The spraying is probably just about complete here. Guys had to go in the early mornings and kind of later in the evening though, like with dicamba, there’s times you can’t go real late in the evening either because of the inversion problems with it.”
