U of M asks for farmworker protections

Researchers with the University of Michigan say seasonal and migrant farmworkers could be at a higher risk of coronavirus exposure.

Researchers say based on results of the Michigan Farmworker Project, and because workers have been deemed “essential” during the state’s stay home order, exposure to the virus could be exacerbated.

The project results found workers have limited or no access to healthcare, overcrowded living conditions, and working conditions including limited access to handwashing, personal protective equipment, and communication barriers which puts them at higher risk of exposure.

They are asking enforcement actions be taken so compliance with COVID-19 protections is upheld and workers be protected from immigration enforcement regardless of legal status.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an executive order which provides some protections for migrant workers including social distancing recommendations that are in effect for the month of June.

Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan State University Extension, and others have created resources for farmers to ensure the safety of farmworkers during the pandemic.
