South Dakota corn planting crosses halfway point

South Dakota corn planting is more than halfway done.

The latest USDA crop progress report says at 51 percent, the pace is more than three weeks ahead of last year and more than a week faster than the normal.

Seven percent of the crop has emerged, equal to the five-year average.

For soybeans, 23 percent is planted and one percent has emerged.

Spring wheat planting is 75 percent complete, well ahead of last year’s 38 percent but slightly behind the usual pace of 78 percent.

The condition of winter wheat improved 12 percentage points over the past week to 78 percent good to excellent.
