Time to inspect pastures

A livestock extension educator is encouraging farmers to start walking their pastures.

Emily Krekelberg with the University of Minnesota says it’s really good to see what’s happening at the ground level this time of year.

“Do you have some spots that you really struggled with last year? Do you have some spots where you maybe did some fall seeding? (if so) You want to check how those seedings did. Or are you finding spots where you maybe need to do some seeding here this spring?”

If that’s the case, she tells Brownfield spring seeding should be effective through mid-May.

“Also looking (for) things like debris or other things that got into the pastures over the winter with high winds. Also, people that have permanent fencing especially around the outer perimeter, (needs to be checked).”

Krekelberg recommends having a plan for the grazing season, especially if trying rotational grazing for the first time.  In that instance, she says figure out where the paddocks will be, get the movable fence in place, and create a schedule.
