A local Muscatine student has used her passion for art to give back to those affected by type 1 diabetes.

Affected personally by the disease herself, Dianne Bunn is a student at McKinley Elementary School who has created artwork as a way to raise money for her to attend Camp Hertko Hollow, a camp for children with diabetes, and also sought to donate money to local nonprofit, Matt’s Diabetes Promise, created in honor of the late Matt Seligman. Matt passed away unexpectedly in 2004 due to complications from type 1 diabetes and was an active high school student who also played football for the Muskies.

On Tuesday afternoon, Dianne and her family presented Kim Seligman with her donation. The donation took place in the MHS football shed in front of the depth chart board.

“Dianne has stated that she would like the funds to go toward whatever is needed most. We currently serve 22 students in the MCSD who live with diabetes with the annual Diabetes Management at School training for school nurses, staff, and parents, along with providing each school with an emergency diabetes kit. Dianne has been an inspiration to us and others in her approach to using her artistic abilities to help others, and we hope that her story will inspire others as well,” shared Kim Seligman.
