A low-pressure system just west of California will drift southward before turning inland during the weekend.  Highlights of the Western storminess will include heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada and possible flooding in southern California.

Significant weekend precipitation may also occur in parts of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.  Farther east, a west-to-east oriented band of precipitation will develop from parts of Nebraska and South Dakota into the middle Atlantic States.

Wet snow may fall across the northern edge of the precipitation shield, while 5-day rainfall could reach 2 to 4 inches from Iowa and Missouri into the central Appalachians.
