Jill Brokaw, sustainability coordinator with the National Pork Board, tells Brownfield the Pork Cares Impact Reports are checkoff funded and give producers tools to better share their sustainability story…

“It’s third party sustainable environmental consultants that we work with.”  She says, “They collect some data from the producer and create this beautiful report. They’re also going to give you a secondary report that shows you what your continuous improvements could be on your farm.” 

She says farmers are finding numerous ways to utilize the reports…

“Farmers are using that story with their bankers, with insurance companies, with neighbors, with counties, with states,” she says, “because it’s a tool to protect your freedom to operate and show what your farm is actually doing in the positive impacts.”

Brokaw, a third-generation hog farmer in Illinois, says the reports are also generating interest from end users abroad…

“International companies, your international buyers, they are all wanting to know what does your carbon footprint look like?”  She says, “What are your greenhouse gas emissions and what are you doing to continually improve that as an industry?”
