Between the Lines (BTL) is a creative writing summer camp for young writers from the U.S. and all over the world, operated by the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of lowa. This summer, BTL will be held as an entirely in-person program for the first time since 2019. Learn how to apply now at bit.ly/btl24.Established in 2008, BTL brings young international and U.S writers together on the University of lowa campus for two weeks of cultural exchange and creative writing instruction led by award-winning writers. The cost of attendance covers a university dorm room, meal plan, and access to campus amenities (such as the rec center and libraries).
This year there will be two sessions: one running from June 9 through June 22, and another running June 30 through July 14. Tuition is $2,000 per participant, but financial aid may be available. For further details, go to bit.ly/btl24. The application deadline is March 15, 2024.
Each BTL session provides a mix of creative writing workshops, individual instruction, and culturally enriching social activities. Plus, all participants have the option of publishing their work in the annual BTL anthology. The program helps students build lasting connections: many participants have gone on to establish literary magazines or other literary organizations of their own.
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of lowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact IWP in advance at iwp@uiowa.edu.
