One million dollars is available to fund research targeting an emerging virus that threatens the U.S. pork supply.

Swine Health Information Center director Dr. Megan Neiderwerder says Japanese encephalitis virus is transmitted by mosquitos and can infect pigs, humans, and horses.

“And what we want to do with this research program is of course develop new tools (and) new knowledge on how we can best prevent the virus from being introduced (and) prepare for a potential incursion.”

She tells Brownfield JEV has been designated a priority virus by the U.S.
