Nebraska wheat production results from this year’s crop tour

Estimates for Nebraska’s winter wheat crop show a significant decline in production and an increase in abandoned acres.

Royce Shaneman, executive director with the Nebraska Wheat Board, tells Brownfield the crop is short, and stands are thin due to drought. “We’ve gotten a little bit of rain here this past week, anywhere from one inch to 5 inches in areas. That’s giving people a little bit of hope. It’s maybe not going to really push the crop to be a great crop, but it’s going to maybe maintain where we’re at and what we have.”

This year’s Hard Red Winter Wheat Tour pegged the crop at 30 million bushels down from an average of about 50 million.
