“The American Midwest often doesn’t get the attention it deserves. While tourists head straight to Chicago or St. Louis, there are amazing vacation spots across these flyover states that deserve their day in the sun,” proclaims Jim Stewart of travel outlet The Discoverer, who has given three tourist destinations in the state of Iowa recognition on their “13 Underrated Things to Do in the Midwest.”
The three amenities being located in Pella, Amana, and Gladbrook.
In Pella, Iowa, home of the famous window company, The Discoverer suggests deep-diving into the Dutch roots of the city’s founders with a visit to Pella’s historical village. Particularly, the Vermeer Windmill, the tallest working windmill in the country. In addition, The Discoverer also suggests stopping by Pella Opera House, Scholte House Museum and Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest reservoir.
In Amana, Iowa, home to the historic Amana Colonies, vacationers are encouraged to visit the 1858 Amana General Store or pick up a loaf of freshly-baked bread at Hahn’s Hearth Oven Bakery, as Amana is famous for using traditional methods to produce food and handmade goods, from quilts to brooms to furniture.
In Gladbrook, Iowa, the unique work of artist and native Pat Acton makes this city a must-stop on any trip, as it is home to Matchstick Marvels. With many having been purchased by Ripley’s Believe It or Not for placement in their museums, Acton’s models—made entirely of matchsticks—have put the Gladbrook on the map.
