Indiana backyard flock presumptive-positive for HPAI

Birds from a small backyard flock in Posey County have tested presumptive-positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza.  The small flock was reported to the Board of Animal Health after significant death loss.  Samples were sent to the national USDA laboratory for confirmation. Since it is a small flock, not engaged in commerce, the finding does not impact Indiana’s highly pathogenic avian influenza-free status that went back into place on April 19th.

The flock has been quarantined and depopulated, because there are no commercial poultry flocks located within 10 km or approximately 6.2 miles of the site a control area does not need to be established.  The agency says it will reach out to local hobby flock owners to offer surveillance testing.

The first case of the 2022-20223 incident in Indiana and the nation was confirmed in early February 2022 in a Dubois County turkey flock.  To date, Indiana has had 10 commercial poultry flocks (both ducks and turkeys) and six small/hobby flocks test positive for HPAI in seven counties.

To date, HPAI has been identified on 823 premises in 47 states since February 2022.
