Producers in Great Plains making decisions as drought enters second year

Ongoing drought conditions have a rancher in the Nebraska Sandhills considering different herd management strategies.

Frank Beel says 70 inches of snow melted too quickly and pastures haven’t greened up in time to take his cow/calf herd to pasture.  “At our place, we’re going to be feeding hay for another 10 to 15 days at least to let the pastures get ahead start.”

He tells Brownfield they’re selling yearlings and fall calves later this month.
