Winter wheat crop for Kansas farmer is fading fast

South-Central Kansas farmer Craig Meeker says he’s already lost hope for his winter wheat crop.

“We have wheat heading and actively dying at the same time.  It’s probably the worst wheat crop I can remember since 1995.”

He tells Brownfield many producers in his area have turned their wheat fields into a feed source for cattle. “Because the summer pasture and the grass hasn’t greened up, and there’s a lot of guys out of feed and trying to figure out how to keep a cow herd alive, too.”

Meeker says some farmers have already had an insurance adjuster to survey the crop, and the region remains in exceptional drought on the latest US Drought Monitor.
