David was born on August 30, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Carl Jacob and Betty M. Begey Lucas.  He married May Cozad in 1963 and later divorced.

Dave graduated from Hayes Catholic High School in 1956.  He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, who was bought out by Avaya, for 30 years before retiring.  Dave then went on to create and operate Lucas Communications in 1990.  When he retired again in 2000, he handed his business down to his son Scott and then down to his grandson Lucas in 2023.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his best friend, Pete LaRue.  Dave was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and Iowa Hawkeyes.  He loved to talk to people and share his stories.  Anyone who knew Dave has probably heard about his good-natured pranks.  He liked to spend time logging his daily activities and journaling important family details.  Most of all Dave loved his family and watching his grandchildren’s ball games.

Dave will be deeply missed by his two children, Angela ‘Angie’ Kemp and her husband, Jay, and Scott Lucas and his wife, Shawn, both of Letts; step daughter, Willa Lee of Colorado; step daughter-in-law, Derri Morgan, of Colorado; five grandchildren, Nickie  Gatsiopoulos and her husband, Sotirios, Alishia Zavednak-Lee, Alex Kemp and his significant other, Mallorie Thompson, Lucas Kemp, and Blake Kemp and his wife, Grace; six great grandchildren, Willow Kemp, Wyatt Kemp, Lincoln Kemp, Tatum Kemp, Dakota Allred, and Stephanie Sandoval; and one sister-in-law, Susan Lucas of Nebraska.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Tom Lucas; step son, Glen Morgan; step son-in-law, Steve Lee; and a step grandson, Mike Diveney.
