FDA names new director of Center for Veterinary Medicine

The Food and Drug Administration has named Tracey Forfa its director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM).  Forfa has been the acting director since December of 2022 when Steven Solomon announced his retirement.

The CVM has been called the FDA for animals.  It is responsible for regulating animal drugs to ensure the meat, milk, and eggs from food-producing animals treated with an animal drug are safe for people to eat, it regulates animal food, medical devices, certain biologics, and also includes the regulation of animal biotechnology.

Forfa is the first non-veterinarian to hold this position, and FDA Commissioner Robert Califf says the agency will soon name a Chief Veterinary Officer to advise on a wide variety of veterinary issues.
