Storminess to greet the New Year: Drought relief in the West, on the Plains, across the Corn Belt; severe weather in the South

Precipitation (mostly rain) across the southern and eastern U.S. will shift eastward, ending along the Atlantic Seaboard late Saturday or early Sunday—except for some residual snow in northern New England.

Meanwhile, multiple Pacific storm systems will continue to affect the West, resulting in 5-day precipitation totals of 4 to 10 inches in parts of northern and central California.  Significant precipitation should also occur in the Great Basin, Intermountain West, and Southwest.

New Year’s Eve (Saturday) and New Year’s Day (Sunday) will feature precipitation ending in the eastern U.S.
