September cheese production up, butter down

Dairy product production was mixed in September.

That’s as producers continue to shift milk to different products to meet demand expectations, while still holding largely within this year’s trends.

The USDA says total cheese production topped 1.139 billion pounds, up 0.4% on the year, with higher Italian type cheese production canceling out lower American type cheese.

Butter production was 141.596 million pounds 1.4% less than a year ago.

Dry milk product production fell sharply, whey products were mostly higher, and frozen products were up from last year.
