Meat Institute releases baseline sustainability report

The U.S. meat industry has released its first report measuring environmental sustainability progress across its supply chain.

Eric Mittenthal with the North American Meat Institute tells Brownfield the report covers 90 percent of meat sold in the U.S.

“Our members are really committed to reducing our environmental impact which is something that a lot of folks are paying attention to,” he says.  “Eighty-one percent of the facilities that reported data from our membership have a commitment to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.”

He says the report also found more than 80 percent of facilities are committed to minimizing packaging waste and more than 70 percent have a focus to reduce food waste.  Animal welfare, food safety, and reducing food insecurity are other commitment areas.
