Preventing foodborne illnesses

Foodborne illnesses are caused by bacteria and are largely preventable.

Salmonella bacteria causes more than 26,000 hospitalizations in the United States every year. Of the 1.4 million human infections, more than 23 percent are attributed to poultry consumption.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is working on a regulatory framework to address salmonella linked to poultry products.
