William Fred Bartenhagen

William ‘Bill’ F. Bartenhagen, 89, of Muscatine, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at his home.

Bill’s wishes were to gather for a Celebration of Life which will be held at the Fruitland Community Center on November 13, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  A luncheon will be provided.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his wife to establish the Bill and Marsha Bartenhagen Memorial Trade School Scholarship for future Louisa-Muscatine students entering trade schools. Bill was born on February 19, 1933, in Muscatine, the son of Richard and Alma (Harder) Bartenhagen.  He married Marsha Hopkins on November 8, 1957, and together they raised three children on the Muscatine Island.  On November 8 of this year, they would have celebrated their 65th anniversary.

He graduated from Muscatine High School and Muscatine Community College with an Associates of Science degree.  After graduating from high school, he served in the United States Air Force on a B-47 Bomber as a crew chief.  Bill worked for Monsanto for 30 years, retiring in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha Bartenhagen; three children, Beth Latta (Don), Jill Cochran and Mitch Bartenhagen (Peg), all of Grandview; his grandchildren, Eric Cochran, Travis Cochran, and Sydney Bartenhagen (Matt Walter); his step-grandchildren, Stacy Maurer (Jazz) and Jason Thompson (Emily); and step great-grandchildren, Chase Miller (Mikayla Leslie), Caleigh Miller, Natalie Thompson, Taylyn Thompson, Emma Walter, and Crue Walter.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard ‘Dick’ Bartenhagen; his sisters, Jan Taylor and Betty Spies; and brother-in-law, Alwayne Spies.
