HPAI detected in Ingham County

The Michigan Department of Agriculture is reporting the first case this fall of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a backyard poultry flock.

A 20-bird mixed species flock in Ingham County tested positive for the virus and has been depopulated.  It is the first case of HPAI in domestic birds since May in the state.

State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says while this newest detection is unfortunate, it is not unexpected as the disease was regularly being found in the state’s wildlife and is still present in the environment.
