Agronomist expecting “new level of yield potential” in Illinois
An Illinois agronomist says current crop conditions indicate the state could see record yields this season.
Cory Muhlbauer is the R&D Agronomy Lead for Precision Planting based in Tremont.
“In general, in Illinois we are sitting pretty good. It’s one of the best crops we have had in a long time. We are pushing another new level of yield potential.”
He tells Brownfield the delayed start to planting actually helped this year.
“We caught some pretty nice war weather to germinate and emerge the seed fairly quickly which creates improvement in uniformity and a good stand count. We are behind where we usually are as far as crop age and maturity, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing because with the health and stand counts that we have things are looking really good at this point.”
Muhlbauer says aside from a few areas experiencing dry conditions and excess rain, rain events have been perfect for the state’s crops. He says if fields stay clean and can catch a couple more rains, it will be a big harvest in Illinois.
