House bill would expand cover crop assistance to farmers

A new bill in the US House would provide an insurance premium subsidy to cover crop farmers.

US Representative Cindy Axne of Iowa says she’s introduced the Conservation Opportunity and Voluntary Environment Resilience Program Act. “What this does is provides a $5 per acre insurance discount to farmers who plant cover crops, so that they can incentivize these important soil health practices,” she said.

The West Des Moines Democrat tells Brownfield the COVER Act would be similar to a program developed during the pandemic. “But this is the first time it’s ever been rolled out as a national piece of policy to codify and make a consistent practice for farmers across this country,” she said.

Axne says she believes the bill will receive bipartisan support.
