Importance of sustainable corn rootworm management
A corn specialist says there are several strategies that can help manage corn rootworm.
Adam Theis is the US corn marketing lead for Pioneer. “Breaking up that crop rotation is what we’ve seen as the best thing folks can do to help manage corn rootworm pressures long-term,” he said.
He says producers can also plant hybrids stacked with multiple traits that target larval rootworm.
Theis tells Brownfield corn rootworm populations vary across the Corn Belt. “The insect overwinters here in the soil,” he said. “Because of that – and it doesn’t fly very far – those population pressures are just incredibly local. You can have fields right next to each other with very different levels of populations just with how that whole field has been treated from a crop rotation standpoint in the past.”
Theis spoke during the recent Corteva summer media event in Johnston, Iowa.
