Mother Nature sends relief for a farmer in Northeast Nebraska

A Northeast Nebraska farmer says her crops are mostly back on schedule after recent relief from Mother Nature.

“It turned things around and hopefully we can get some more.”

Anne Meis of Elgin tells Brownfield her area is in severe drought but received an inch of rain earlier this week. “That’s really been a salvation.  Before that, corn was starting to curl. Things were looking tough. Our pastures were starting to dry up.”

She says her area has been in a moisture deficit since last October. “Before this rain, we were irrigating.  We are about 90 percent irrigated on our crops. We were irrigating pretty heavily before that.  Our soil moisture probes were saying they needed it.  When you look out over our pastures, they were starting to look pretty tough and brown.”

Meis says rain chances persist through the weekend.
