USDA: corn acres up from March, soybeans down

The USDA says producers planted more corn acres than expected this year, while soybeans fell short of projections.

That followed significant planting delays in some key U.S. growing areas against nearly ideal conditions in other parts of the region.

Corn planted area was 89.921 million million acres, about a half a million more than in March’s prospective planting report, but 4% less than the 2021 total of 93.357 million. Harvested area is seen at 81.94 million acres, compared to 85.388 million last year.

Soybean planted area was 88.325 million acres, more than 2.6 million lower than the initial estimate and 1% higher than the year ago total of 87.195 million acres. Harvested area is projected at 87.511 million acres, compared to 86.332 million the year before.

All wheat planted area is pegged at 47.092 million acres, slightly larger than anticipated and above the 2021 figure of 46.703 million acres, but still potentially the fifth lowest total on record. Harvested area for all types of wheat is estimated at 37.622 million acres, compared to 37.163 million a year ago. This year’s planted area for winter wheat came out at 34.006 million acres, compared to 33.648 million the year before, with harvested area of 25.002 million acres, compared to 25.464 million in 2021. Spring wheat planted area was reported at 11.11 million acres, compared to 11.42 million last year, with harvested area of 10.705 million acres, compared to 10.165 million a year ago.

These totals will likely change since as of June 1st, the USDA says 4.027 million acres of corn and 15.806 million acres of soybeans were still unplanted. There will be an official resurvey of producers in Minnesota and the Dakotas due to planting delays earlier in the season with the results out August 12th.

The USDA’s next set of production estimates is out July 12th.
