Corteva, BASF, and MS Technologies bringing nematode resistant E3 soybeans to market

Corteva Agriscience, BASF, and MS Technologies are entering into a trait licensing agreement to bring nematode resistant Enlist soybeans to market.

Mike Dillon with Corteva says the next generation E3 soybean will feature BASF’s transgenic trait for nematode control.

“Parties got together and worked through it and said this is a good thing for farmers, it’s going to broaden protection (and) give farmers more flexibility and more options. And at the end of the day, that is what’s important.”

He tells Brownfield soybean cyst nematode accounts for more than $1 billion in economic losses for U.S. farmers each year.

Dillon anticipates commercialization by the late 2020’s.

“From a product development standpoint (and) from a testing standpoint, we feel very good it can deliver. Of course the largest challenge we have is getting some of the regulatory approvals around the world for import. That takes time.”

Linda Trolinder with BASF says the company is in its fifth year testing the nematode resistant trait and it has demonstrated an average 8 percent yield benefit above today’s SCN-resistant varieties.
