US and European officials exploring efforts to help export Ukrainian grain

President Biden says the US is working with its European partners to move grain out of Ukraine and help bring down food prices.

During his remarks at the AFL-CIO Quadrennial Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on Tuesday, the President said Russia’s ongoing attacks are preventing Ukraine from exporting agricultural goods.  “It can’t go out of the Black Sea because it will get blown out of the water,” he says.  “So, we’re working on a plan to get it out of other countries by rail.”

But, Biden says Ukraine uses a rail gauge that is different than the rest of the tracks in Europe.  “So we’re going to build temporary silos on the borders of Ukraine, including in Poland,” he says.  “So we can transfer it from those cars, into those silos, into cars in Europe, and get it out to the ocean.”

He says from there – the grain can be exported and would be available on the global market.
