NPPC farm bill priorities include increase in vaccine bank funding

The National Pork Producers Council is calling for continued vaccine bank funding in the next farm bill.

NPPC chief veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom says Foot and Mouth Disease remains a top priority.

“We’re definitely going to be lobbying coming the 2023 Farm Bill for an increased level of funding for the Foot and Mouth Disease vaccine bank. We’re hoping if there’s an ASF (African swine fever) virus vaccine that we could add that to the countermeasures bank.”

She tells Brownfield NPPC is looking for more than just additional money for the vaccine bank in the next farm bill.

“Get out National Animal Health Laboratory Networks fully funded, more money for USDA to have vets on the ground in the field, and our prevention and preparedness grants that have been really helpful in the last few years.”

Wagstrom says NPPC lobbyists are working closely with ag committee staffs in Washington as farm bill hearings ramp up in advance of the 2023 Farm Bill.

Brownfield interviewed Wagstrom at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines Thursday.
