Hinson calls for lock and dam upgrades

A U.S. Representative from Iowa says infrastructure improvements are needed along the Mississippi River.

Republican Ashley Hinson says she recently toured Lock and Dam 12 near Bellevue, Iowa with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“It was very clear to me that we have an aging system,” Hinson said. “We need to do everything we can to devote targeted and critical resources to our lock and dam system because it’s a vital part of not only the long-term health and viability of the river, but supporting our agriculture economy.”

She tells Brownfield the bipartisan infrastructure law will invest $829 million in lock and dam modernization projects along the upper Mississippi River.

“That will help not only with the environmental aspect of the river, but also with some of the lock and dams,” Hinson said. “Right now that is starting a little further south of us at Lock and Dam 25, but our goal is to continue to advocate for those resources.”

The funding is part of the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program.
