Dairy leader pushes for more ag trade deals

The co-president and CEO of Associated Milk Producers wants the U.S. to pursue new trade deals.

Sheryl Meshke says, “The U.S. needs to get back into the game. We need to craft comprehensive agreements.”

Meshke told the Senate Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Commodities, Risk Management, and Trade Thursday that the U.S. government must pursue additional market access as the U.S faces experienced and well-established competitors who have been exceptionally active in making new free trade agreements.  “At a minimum, these efforts should lower most favored nation tariffs and secure specific commitments on non-tariff barriers like the EU’s efforts to monopolize common cheese names.”

Meshke also called for the passage of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act to help move products to market faster and help the U.S. dairy industry keep up with its global competitors.
