Heat wave across the Southwest to build northeastward next week

Building Southwestern heat will push temperatures to 110°F or higher at low-elevation locations, starting on Thursday and continuing through the weekend.  Extreme heat will briefly extend into California’s Central Valley.

Meanwhile, torrid weather will persist in Texas, with heat expanding during the weekend eastward along the Gulf Coast and northward across the central Plains.

Before heat spreads, frequent showers will continue across much of the eastern half of the country.  Five-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 3 inches or more from the central Plains to the southern Appalachians, and in the middle and northern Atlantic States.

In contrast, dry weather will persist through week’s end in most areas from California to central, eastern, and southern Texas.
