More planting remains in South Dakota

Better weather has helped South Dakota farmers play catch up on planting.

The USDA says 86 percent of the state’s corn is planted, behind 97 percent last year, but ahead of the five-year-average of 82 percent. Corn emerged was 44 percent, well behind 78 percent last year.

Sixty-one percent of soybeans have been planted, running behind last year’s pace of 91 percent. Soybeans emerged was 16 percent, behind last year’s pace of 60 percent.

For the spring wheat crop, 97 percent has been planted with 85 percent emergence. Winter wheat is rated 31 percent good.

Oats are 93 percent planted with emergence at 78 percent, behind 93 percent last year.

Topsoil moisture is 56 percent adequate and subsoil moisture is rated 26 percent short.
