Minnesota Pork CEO describes legislative session as a “mixed bag”
The CEO of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association calls the recently adjourned legislative session a mixed bag for agriculture.
David Preisler tells Brownfield there were positives like a payback into the unemployment insurance trust fund.
“Because otherwise that would’ve resulted in some pretty big increases in that tax that employers would have to pay. We believe that in some of the Hero Pay pieces that’s going to work for some employees on farms.”
Minnesota Pork also welcomed additional funding for broadband and emergency animal disease planning and response.
But he says there were also several disappointments.
“We’ll have to see if there’s a special session. If there is, there’s certainly the opportunity for some of these things to get worked on. First and foremost is the tax bill (because) there are some really significant pieces in there that would be helpful for farms.”
Preisler says that includes a homestead tax adjustment and changes to how agricultural land is taxed for school buildings.
It remains unclear whether Governor Walz and leaders in the House and Senate can agree to hold a special session.
