Nebraska farmer says a approach to fertilizer application could help absorb high costs

A South-Central Nebraska farmer says he’s stretching inputs during the growing season to help avoid stick shock from record prices.

Andy Jobman of Gothenburg tells Brownfield split applying fertilizer can maximize nitrogen use efficiency. “That really spoon feeds that crop from start to finish and helps it be as efficient as possible.  I think operating in that kind of a mindset is really going to help guys this year versus management plans that throw it out there all at once.”

He says it can be a tedious process, but hopes it pays off at harvest. “On our farm, we put a little bit down with our strip till, we put a little bit on with our planter, we side dress and then we finish off with one or two shots through the center pivot.”

Jobman is the president of the Nebraska Corn Growers Association.
