Michigan food and ag investment fund awards five new projects

The director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says the latest grants to be awarded through the state’s Food and Agriculture Investment Program will continue to grow opportunities for farmers.

“If they can have a market that’s close by, it’s more money in their bottom line and it also helps our communities by just having a business that’s more established with more jobs in the community.”

Gary McDowell tells Brownfield the $630,000 approved this month will act as seed money to increase processing and use more of the state’s agricultural goods.

“Actually leveraging about $85 million in private sector investment,” he says.

King Milling Company in Lowell received the largest grant, $250,000, to build a four mill with future capacity to mill 10,000 hundredweight daily.

Coffee roaster La Colombe in Norton Shores, Townline Hatchery of Zeeland, Wine Chips in Paw Paw, and Great Lakes Malting Company in Traverse City were also awarded grants.

McDowell says the legislature approved about $2 million for the fund this fiscal year and the department continues to evaluate projects worthy of the remaining dollars.
