Input availability is a concern for South Dakota farmers

Central South Dakota farmer Reno Brueggeman says crop inputs have been hard to come by this planting season.

“A lot of chemical suppliers that say they are out of supply and people are really shopping,” he said. “And I don’t mean shopping in a good way for price. They are shopping for supply.”

He tells Brownfield he was fortunate to get products purchased last fall, but the most recent struggle has been rising diesel prices. “Clear diesel is over $5.25 in our area,” Brueggeman said. “I just bought a tanker load of farm fuel and I think it was in the mid-$4 range.”

The national average of diesel fuel was $5.57 per gallon on Friday, according to AAA.
