Corn emerges in North Iowa a week after planting

A north-central Iowa farmer credits last week’s heatwave for popping corn out of the ground about a week after it was planted.

Casey Schlichting of Clear Lake tells Brownfield he started planting corn May 7th.

“You can row that corn already. I drove by yesterday and my wife is like ‘Hey, your corn is up.’ And I was like ‘we planted it a week ago.’ And sure enough you can row it now.”

He says there was a little rain the day after he planted and then it got hot.

“(It was) 93 degrees Monday and Tuesday and (the corn) got going and hopped out of the ground. Very happy with that and hope the rest comes up quick too.”

Schlichting wrapped up planting Monday and says his next chore will be finding days that aren’t too windy to spray post-emergence herbicide.
