Planting pace picks up near Cedar Rapids

An eastern Iowa farmer says Mother Nature forced him to wait until May to start planting.

Lance Lillibridge of Vinton tells Brownfield the recent heat wave allowed them to get tractors in the field. “We’re about 10 percent done,” he said. “We finally got started this week and the ground conditions are getting better.”

Even with the delayed start, Lillibridge says they could wrap things up soon with a favorable 10-day forecast. “There’s a few farms out here that we’re going to wait a little bit more, but I think a couple of days will get us into those fields,” he said.

Lillibridge typically raises corn and soybeans, but has decided to only plant corn this spring.
