IL farmer capitalizing on planting window
An east-central Illinois farmer is working double time to capitalize on a planting window.
KJ Johnson said he’s about half done with soybeans and a quarter done with corn planting. And he tells Brownfield if he’s able to duck forecasted rains this weekend…
“If we could just keep rolling, I think we’ve got a good shot at getting the vast majority of this crop in here in the next three, four days,” Johnson said.
The Vermilion County farmer, near Champaign, said planting had been slow before this week.
“A good friend told me he thought were in east-central Illinois, but we were in London, England,” he said. “Because it’s just been rainy and cold up to this week and now it turns 90 degrees and it’s completely switched.
But Johnson said most farmers are catching up in his area.
“Farmers can put a lot of corn and soybeans in the ground with now 16, 24, 32 row planters,” he said. “If we get a good stretch, we can get a lot in the ground.”
