Avian influenza continues to spread in May

The USDA says as of Friday, there are now 283 poultry flocks affected by highly-pathogenic avian influenza scattered across 32 states.

USDA says 171 of the flocks are commercial growers and 112 are backyard flocks.  More than 37 million birds have been depopulated because of avian influenza.

New cases this month include a backyard flock in Pierce County, Wisconsin (30 birds), a backyard flock in Bremer County Iowa (50 birds), backyard flocks in Carver County (38) and Chisago County, Minnesota (30), and backyard flocks in Day County (80), Hamlin County, South Dakota. (20),

A commercial turkey flock in Beadle County South Dakota was reported Wednesday, affecting 56,200 birds and another commercial turkey flock of 19,300 birds tested positive for avian influenza Wednesday in Barron County, Wisconsin.  Barron County has several turkey producers, and five cases have been reported in that county alone impacting a total of almost 224-thousand birds, with all but 150 of them turkeys.
