An active weather pattern across much of the Plains, Corn Belt

An intensifying storm system currently crossing the central Plains will reach the upper Mississippi Valley by early Sunday.

Subsequently, the storm will drift northeastward into Canada and weaken, although a trailing system will follow a similar path—from the central Plains into the Great Lakes States—early next week.

As a result, 5-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 3 inches or more across a broad area, including the Midwest and the northern half of the Plains, leading to additional planting delays and possible flooding.  Weekend showers and thunderstorms could briefly flare as far south as the southern Plains, providing limited drought relief.

However, dry conditions will persist during the next 5 days from California to the southern Rockies.
